Hopefully you'll be able to spot it in the bottom of your panniers / messenger bag / handlebar basket, with it being bright green and all. How long does the battery last?
The battery is pretty punchy, but running times depend on what mode it is used in. With both the laser and LED light in steady mode, it will last for 2hrs. With both in flashing mode, the light should last at least 18hrs from fully charged. It lasts 32hrs as a low-intensity flashlight. That said, the battery life does vary, depending on the level of use, battery storage, operating temperature, age and a whole host of other variables.
Our generic running times can be seen on the reverse of your Laserlight's box, or on our help pages online. The laser and the LED functions can also be switched on and off independently from each other, hence why we show the run times as a grid.
How do I charge it?
Every Laserlight is supplied with a neat USB power cable that snaps to magnetic charging contacts - easy! The charging cable is magnetic because the Laserlight is a fully sealed unit. Having micro USB sockets covered by rubber bungs, or parts to unclip or unscrew would compromise the waterproofing of the Laserlight, and it would mean that we could only make a bicycle light that was water resistant. Instead of this, the Laserlight is waterproof to a rating of IPX7, and in testing it is able to withstand operation underwater at a depth of a metre for a duration of an hour.
Our Laserlight charging cable is designed to work with a standard powered USB port - whether that be in your computer, the back of your television or elsewhere. It's also possible to use an adaptor to charge your Laserlight in a wall socket.
Will it fit my handlebars?
The marine-grade steel bracket is designed to fit bars between 22-32mm in diameter; three rubber inserts (provided) ensure a snug fit. The standard handlebar diameter for newer road bikes is 31.8mm, traditional road bikes are 25.4mm and a folding Brompton's handlebars measure 22.2mm. The overarching majority of bicycle handlebars will fall somewhere between this range, but if you have any specific queries then please do ask!

|Aero integrated handlebar and stem||Firstly, lucky you! It sounds like you've got a pretty sweet bike. Bars with and integrated stem are more likely to be on the high-end racing and time trial bikes. Your bars are not guaranteed to be cylindrical next to the stem but don't worry, you won't be the first to try and fit a Laserlight on them! Manufacturers are well aware of the difficulty attaching electronics and other components to a set of non-standard bars and so they manufacture low-profile accessory bars which fit either below the stem or to the headset top cap. Your Laserlight should fit snugly to the accessory bar. |
|Brompton & folding bikes||The Laserlight is supplied with three rubber inserts that fit inside the bracket. Bromptons and folding bicycles typically have smaller diameter handlebars than other bikes and the thickest rubber insert has been specially adapted for this purpose. We'd advise unclipping and pocketing your Laserlight before you fold your bike to avoid any knocks in transit.|
|Cargo bikes||The challenge that some cargo bike riders have is that the overall length of the bike cannot always be seen or anticipated by all road users. On a standard cargo bike the Laserlight can be adjusted so that the projection clears the front carrier, but get in touch first if you are in any doubt.|
|Handlebar bags and baskets||The Laserlight will need to have a clear, unhindered view of the floor in order to make a clear projection. There is usually always a way to make them both work well on your bicycle. If you have any queries about your current setup on your handlebars then please send us a photo and we can better advise. |
|Mountain bikes||Once again, no problems here. Find a spot on your bars that isn't tapered for a secure fastening. We advise that next to the stem is the best spot as it will be cylindrical and of a standard size. |
|Recumbents||Some of our early adopters are using their Laserlight on their recumbents to increase the size of their profile on the roads. However, recumbents are all different, so if you would like clarification on whether the Laserlight will fit onto yours, then just send us a model number or photo! The Laserlight is primarily designed to be mounted on handlebars, at around 80-110cm. When mounted on a lower point, the bike image will be marginally smaller, but also brighter. Many recumbent riders use helmet-mounted lighting systems as the head is generally the highest point on a low-profile recumbent. The Laserlight is not designed to be mounted on a cycle helmet; aside from the Laserlight being heavy for a helmet light (220g), the projection relies upon a relatively steady base. The Laserlight projection shows the shape of a bicycle. The bicycle appears 'squashed' or 'flattened' when seen straight, e.g. if you shone the Laserlight at a wall. This is to account for the angle of projection, as when it is angled towards the floor, the image stretches. If the Laserlight is mounted sideways on a vertical post, the bicycle image will become further elongated, which is why we don't advise you to mount the Laserlight sideways. |
|Road bikes||Yep, we fit right in here too. The best place to mount a Laserlight on a road bike is on the handlebars and as close as possible to the stem. Your Laserlight's bracket won't impede any of the cabling beneath your bar tape, and the bars won't be tapering at this point. |
|Other ways||For example an accessory bar that fits to your stem cap - perfect if your handlebars are already full of brake cables, grips and gadgets. There are plenty of alternative accessory bars to fit to your bikes, so please let us know if you find a particular favourite!|
The green laser: Can we do that?
The Laserlight emits a white front facing light which you'll be required to use by law. In addition to this, it contains a green laser projection which creates an image on the ground ideally 5m in front of your bicycle. The laser image is green as this is the most visible wavelength to the human eye; the precise optimum wavelength is 532nm and the Laserlight gets pretty close to that optimum wavelength at 530nm.
In terms of our certification as a product, we've had to ensure that the laser is in no way harmful to people, buildings or objects, and it has been thoroughly tested to prove this. Part of the testing process tracked whether the laser would cause any damage to a retina when shone in its entirety through an iris - and the Laserlight passed. CE testing means that we have carried out testing and can demonstrate that the product is safe to use and does not harm anyone or anything. This includes the laser and any other components within the light such as the battery. In terms of the product, we have undergone 'reliability testing' that is above and beyond any regulatory compliance required to sell products to consumers. This involves things like water testing, salt spray testing, drop testing, vibration testing etc.
The Laser is Class IIIR Laser which, like all lasers can be hazardous if misused. However our laser is certified as safe for consumers to use and further any potential for ocular damage is greatly reduced since our DOE (the part that creates our Bike Image) causes the power of the laser to be diffused over a larger area.

How bright is the light in lumens (lm)?
The Laserlight is primarily designed for urban riding. The white front light has three modes: flash, low and high power. The flashing and low-power settings operate at 100lm and the high power setting is 300lm. For most well-lit streets, the 100lm setting will probably be sufficient, whereas the 300lm setting is for darker areas and when you need to stand out more.
A lumen is a unit of measurement, and gives a good indication of the overall brightness of a bulb. It takes into account the light emitted and also how widely the beam is spread, so in this way it differs from a candlepower or wattage measurement. Light will illuminate an area more dimly if it is spread over a wider area and for bike lights you don't necessarily want a very slim column of light.
Typically there is a legal minimum for the brightness of bicycle lights but not an upper limit, so around the world the guidelines are generally different.
However, there is a happy medium for the brightness of bike lights - and we like to think we've found it!
Is the Laserlight theft-resistant?
Indeed it is - just take your it with you when you lock up your bike! The Laserlight is designed to be removed from your bicycle every time you leave it - all it takes is one finger on the trigger to lift it out of the bracket and pop it into your pocket. It's easy to take off even when wearing thick gloves or with wet, cold fingers (we've tried).
Are Laserlights waterproof?
Laserlights are designed and tested to be waterproof to a depth of a metre - that means full submersion to this depth.
Our Laserlight has been tested and has passed IPX7, which is a rating given to electronic items which can be fully submersed in water and still operate. The standard dictates that the device can withstand being underwater to a depth of a metre for 30 minutes - and the Laserlight was submersed for an hour. Not that you'd ever need it to do this, but the world can be a wet place and we don’t want to take any chances! Ensuring that a Laserlight is fully submersible means that it will survive being used in the driving rain for hours and hours.
It's very different to other waterproof ratings - IPX6, for example, only synthesises heavy splashing and rain for three minutes, and it must show no water seepage. IPX8 is for products that are designed to be continually submersed during use, as is the case with diving watches and scuba equipment. So whilst the term 'waterproof' sounds finite, in reality it covers a number of different standards.
Does the Laserlight work during the day?
Most countries around the world will require all riders to have a white front light and red rear light at times when the light is low. While riding with lights is a good tool to stay visible to other road users, they're only fully effective if they fall into someone's field of vision.
Bike lights are excellent in helping you to be seen, but they are not as useful as they could be in a variety of situations. This includes when you are alongside other vehicles, in a queue of traffic, at junctions, when hidden around a bend, when on a shared footpath/cycleway, when crossing paths with pedestrians and when, through no fault of your own, in the blind spot of a larger vehicle.
The Beryl Laserlight has been designed first and foremost as an upgrade to a bicycle light. It is primarily designed to be in use at night, when you face additional challenges to be seen on the roads. In the same way that regular bicycle lights are not as effective during the day, the Laserlight will also be subject to the same laws of physics. This is a bicycle light that, like most bicycle lights, works best at night, at twilight or in lower light conditions. Here in the UK, more than 50% of commuting hours are in low light conditions, and it can even be pretty gloomy at 3pm in the winter! Why is the bike image upside-down?
This is a matter of opinion! The beauty of the laser projection is that, unlike a white front light, it can be seen from virtually all angles.
Potential hazards can come from all angles, for example a vehicle alongside turning in front of you, hook-turning traffic, pedestrians crossing a street, vehicles from a side road, an oncoming vehicle or other bikes joining a cycle path. Rather than displaying multiple bike symbols from different angles, the key to the Laserlight is its simplicity. A bicycle will still look like a bicycle when seen from upside-down, or sideways, or from any angle in between. It's sole purpose is to help you be seen and to keep you safe on the roads, and so a simple, striking image achieves this fastest.
